Status (updated 6/28/16) Concept study was approved by GDOT. Signal revision has been submitted to GDOT for approval to implement in 2019.
The SR 9 (Alpharetta Highway) at Bethany Bend Intersection Improvement Concept Study was an identified project from the 2012 Livable Centers Initiative plan in the area. Although several ideas for improving this intersection were considered as part of the LCI plan, the Milton Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP), and other traffic studies, a detailed intersection analysis and concept design was recommended to select the most appropriate improvement. Traffic studies of this intersection were analyzed in 2009 as part of the new Cambridge High School located at the intersection of Bethany Bend and Cogburn Road, approximately 0.5 miles from SR 9 at Bethany Bend. Recommendations for improvements have been explored but because of the current skew and development on all corners, a short term fix would be very difficult to construct. Ultimately, improvements to this intersection should address vehicular and freight operations, safety, and pedestrian/bicycle accessibility.
The City received Federal funding to conduct a concept study. The goal of this concept study was to assess the transportation impacts of various intersection improvement alternatives, determine the preferred location for the improvement, prepare mapping, identify environmental impacts and permits required to construct the project and prepare concept plans for alternatives.
The intersection improvements were analyzed for 3 different scenarios. The first scenario is small scale short term improvements that can be easily implemented. This scenario is part of the GDOT Concept Report. The second scenario is improvements that the City could pursue prior to the widening of SR 9 if funding became available. The third scenario is improvements that would be done as part of the SR 9 widening by GDOT. The improvement alternatives with the second and third scenarios would be the same only the implementation time and the funding would be different.
The GDOT SR 9 widening project information can be viewed on the Project Information Page.
A Public Information Open House for both the SR 9 widening and the SR 9 at Bethany Bend intersection improvements was held on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Milton City Hall Council Chambers/Court Room. The information provided at the meeting included:
The Offset T alternative was selected to move forward with the SR 9 widening project as can be seen in the displays from the November 2016 Public Information meeting displays at the bottom of this page. The short term improvement alternative was evaluated by GDOT for implementation.
